Online Gambling in Australia - Everything you should know

Australia Casinos

Please note that according to the Interactive Gambling Act of 2001 all gambling providers are forbidden to promote and offer any gambling products and services, as gambling is illegal in Australia

Although Australia is an amazing country, unique from top to bottom in many aspects, for online gamblers, this region can hardly be called a paradise. For a short while, new online casinos in Australia were constantly emerging and this country even gave birth to two amazing software developers companies, Aristocrat and Ainsworth.

Nowadays, all the online gambling market is shut down and there are few hopes for the better.

History of Gambling in Australia

Before we dive into our modern days and the Interactive Gambling Act, let’s go back in time to when it all started in this country in the online gambling field and when the first Australian online casino was opened.

  • Australia is a fairly young country and gambling has only been recorded in this country since 1810. The first gambling event was a horse race held at Hyde Park in Sydney. The first-ever casino in the country, appeared much later, in February 1973 in Tasmania when the Wrest Point Hotel Casino opened its doors to the public.
  • However, the lottery seems to have quite a history in Australia having been organized ever since 1880. The second form of popular gambling in the country entered in 1950, in the form of slot machines, also called “Pokies”.
  • In the following years, slot machines became the most popular gambling form in Australia, spreading from New South Wales to the entire country. This also marked another great event because it led to the birth of the Aristocrat Leisure Company, founded by Len Ainsworth, which is today one of the world’s biggest and oldest casino software development companies.
  • Len didn’t remain in the company for long and years later he founded a second company that also became popular called, Ainsworth Games Technology.
  • Both of these companies managed to get a worldwide reputation having operating offices in multiple countries and powering thousands of online casinos around the world.

As the online market developed, plenty of new Australian online casinos appeared on the market as well as offshore online casinos that accept Australian players.

Unfortunately, on the 11th of July 2001, the Interactive Gambling Act was released and that marked the end of legal online gambling in the country and no new Australian online casino ever appeared after that day.

The act was mainly targeted at independent online casino operators making it illegal for them to cater any sort of gambling services in the country.  Any Australian online casino has been forbidden along with in-play sports betting and even lotteries.

For a while, gamblers continued to play at the best Australian online casinos that were located offshore. Since this country was considered one of the biggest gambling markets in the world, there were plenty of new casinos for Australian players emerging.

A couple of reforms were brought to the initial Act in 2017 when the unlicensed Aussie online casinos were also forbidden, putting an end to the offshore market also.

Over 150 online casinos Australia have withdrawn from the market and the government became even more convinced that banning online gambling was right since the amount of money that Aussie players lost in gambling activities was reduced.

The Interactive Gambling Act - Changes in 2019-2022

In 2019, new changes were made to the Interactive Gambling Act, but they will only come into effect in mid-2022. Engine Australia has been appointed to build and run a register that will change gambling altogether in Australia for players. The register will allow players to self-exclude from all licensed interactive wagering services for a minimum of 3 months, up to a lifetime period.

It functions similarly to GamSTOP, only this one is specifically for Aussie players, not for UK players. The register will be free and will ensure the protection of your personal details. If you choose to sell-exclude, you will not be able to place a bet, open a new account, or receive marketing messages.

Theoretically, the register will protect gamblers and ensure that they are safe, and will help them walk away when they feel like they have a gambling problem.

Final Thoughts

Australia was a great market for both online gamblers and any AUS online casino that was operating in the region. However, given the legislation, it’s impossible for gamblers in this country to find the best online casino for Australian players.

Even if the country would benefit greatly from the income generated by any of the newest casinos Australia acquiring a license, the government seems to believe that by banning online gambling the benefits clearly outweigh the cons. This is why it’s less likely to ever see new online casinos Australia ever emerging again.
