Plans to Create Super Casino are abandoned by Football Club
20
October 2005
The plans to build a
Las Vegas styled super-casino in the UK, were recently
scrapped by the popular UK football (soccer) team
Manchester United. The team had plans to build this
super casino next to its Old Trafford ground, but it
looks as though those plans won’t be realized any time
soon.
In May of 2005, Manchester United PLC decided to join
forces with the US based massive gaming corporation, Las
Vegas Sands. The partnership was for the purpose of
submitting casino complex development plans. The
original plans included a slew of wonderful features
including a 5-star hotel, health club, sports bar and
lavish restaurants.
Unfortunately, while the plans for building such a super
casino were initially hopeful, the Manchester United
Football Club came to believe that Blackpool was most
likely to end up wining the one Government license the
club needs for their super casino. Thus, Manchester
United decided that it was best to put their plans to
rest and stop any further spending on their casino
project.
The Manchester United Football Club has made it clear
that their decision had nothing to do with the 790
million pound takeover from Malcolm Glazer, as this
takeover was not fully completed until well after their
initial casino plans had been put together.
Andy Anson, the United Commercial Director, has said
that while the football club maintains a strong
relationship with both the Trafford Council and Las
Vegas Sands Corporation, they have jointly decided with
Las Vegas Sands Corp. that it is best not to pursue the
proposal at the present time. Therefore, it appears only
time will tell if these two groups will come together
and create the fantastic super casino they planned for.
